Saturday night saw the opening hit out for the VCSC at Wangaratta City Speedway.

Warm and clear skies greeted competitors as they came through the pit gate all eager to get out on the track.

With many divisions on the night fielding small fields the action on the track was set to be fast and furious, as well as the pace between races in the pits! The VCSC had some familiar faces returning for the season as well as some new cars and drivers including #12 Justin Paull, #18 William Van Der Ark, #26 Danny Allchin and #77 Matt Noakes. Also returning to the track was #72 Warren Gravina.

Heat 1 was led away by #5 Andrew Lardner who was overtaken by #10 Robbie Gordon going into turn 1. The field sorted itself out on the new surface that has been put down at Wangaratta City Speedway. The yellows were out after a few laps as #42 Michael Dickson stopped in turn 3. Unfortunately his night came to a premature end as you can’t drive a car with a hole in the side of the motor!

Racing restarted for the final few laps with Gordon taking the flag followed by Paull and Van Der Ark.

Heat 2 was another quick affair with drivers adapting to an improving track. Turn 3 & 4 provided the drivers with some challenges and unfortunately Noakes rolled in turn 3. The damage wasn’t as bad as first thought, however, the car was put on the trailer for the night and Noakes walked away a little sore but ok. Heat 2 was won by Gordon followed by Paull and Lardner.

Heat 3 did not go to plan at all for Paull. His car had issues starting and was on the infield when the green flag dropped. Gordon again jumped to the lead followed by Van Der Ark, Lardner and Gravina, who was enjoying getting to know his car again as well as his new bike motor. With 2 laps to go Lardner’s car coughed and spluttered before taking off again until he had to pull infield with fuel issues. Gordon took an impressive win with Van Der Ark 2nd, getting faster and faster each lap.

The Feature race was a fast affair with Gordon jumping to the lead with Paull falling into line behind him. Van Der Ark made a great move under Lardner to take 3rd place into turn 1 with Gravina right behind. The track was quite smooth and allowed for some fast lap times. Unfortunately for Lardner his fuel problems came back to haunt him and the yellows came out with a lap to go. The Chief Steward declared the race with the win going to Gordon followed by Paull, Van Der Ark and Gravina.

Club President Michael Dickson was thrilled for the new members to be able to get a hit out and some great results for the first night out.

“The new members did a great job. You could see the excitement on their faces after each race and they were getting more and more comfortable on the night. It was such a great atmosphere in the pits. The speedway put a great track on for us after some major works in the off season and I hope it will continue to improve for them as their season progresses and we return for our Victorian Title later in the season.”

The VCSC’s next race meeting is at Rosedale Speedway on Saturday 15th November. We hope to see you there!
