Gibbes Wins At Gatton
Barry Gibbes took the honours last Saturday night at Lockyer Valley Speedway chased home by Emma Harris and Dave Collins.
The weather was perfect as competitors rolled into the Lockyer valley and with an earlier than normal start time to most speedways, plus a very smooth surface setup was always going to be critical and tricky. USA visitor Wes Irwin was a very welcome addition to our ranks.
Heat 1 was lead away by Dave Swan in the #8 machine however Gary Hudson was on the move from grid 6. Peter Pesschier was running fourth before spinning in turn 2 to bring out the first caution for the night and would restart rear only to bring out the reds 2 laps later as his right rear wheel centre sheared off putting him up the wall and over. Peter was ok and car would be repaired for next heat. Hudson took the win from Barry Gibbes, Chris Paolini and Dave Swan.
Track conditions caught nearly everyone out in heat 2 as cars struggled to find the needed grip except for #41 Emma Harris who cruised to victory as the rest of the field diced but unable to pass much. Harris led home Sarah Walker who put in a great drive ahead of the repaired Pesschier, Dave Collins, Gibbes, Herb Hecker, Wes Irwin and Dave Swan.
Hudson took out heat 3 from Sarah Walker who had a great battle with Paolini for 2nd place and further back saw Collins and Harris waging their own battle. Both battles saw good clean close racing as everybody waited for a mistake from the car in front to try and dive through. So Hudson took it from Walker, Paolini, Collins, Harris and Hecker. Byron Schmoll wasn’t having a great night with engine dramas as the crew worked on the car trying to sort it out.
Feature time saw Hecker off pole with Collins outside, 2nd row filled by Pesschier and Gibbes with Paolini and Harris right behind them. High points scorer Hudson sat back next row with Walker and was looking to try and continue his form. However at the green it was Hecker and Collins who would slide high leaving the door open for Gibbes and Harris who lept out turn 2 to take the front 2 spots. Gibbes opened up a small lead as Collins and Harris diced over second before the yellow lights came on for an incident in turn 3 that saw Hudson facing the wrong way and Walker in the fence. Hudson would restart but Walker was done for the night. Gibbes got the jump on the field at the restart with Harris chasing him all the way to the finish and Collins right on her tail and that’s how they finished. Hudson was fourth followed by Paolini, Pesschier, Swan, Hecker and Irwin.
A big THANKYOU to everybody from the Lockyer Valley Speedway. Your efforts you have put into the speedway are fantastic and on behalf of our club we wish you all the best for the rest of the season!!
